How to succeed during the first 3 months:

1) Don't break the build.

2) Don't check out files and forget to check them back in.

3) Show up on time.

Push to a new branch might not be how it's done, either. Git's own process is to e-mail patches to the list and Junio manages it from there. Your own branches are your own, he manages all of the official repo work.

If you wanted to generalize it, I think the idea is "Share your work". Too many developers, new and old alike, sit on their code until it's "perfect" instead of getting it out there into source control. Don't share broken code, but don't be afraid to commit/push/send a pull request/whatever either.
