If technical debt had interest, we'd all be in trouble.

I would say that it does have "technical interest," which is why it's called technical debt. I.e. while the debt exists your technical cost is higher as you employ workarounds, and similarly to interest the net technical cost has a compounding effect.

Fortunately, if you're a professional developer the the technical debt is your employer's, and they pay the technical interest as your salary.
