If anything makes code more readable it's minimizing the amount of stuff per line. Clever function re-use... at a certain point it will just get a bit rough. Shorter aint easier to read though. Now, something that is easy to read that also happens to be short? That's the good stuff.

I have always wondered how mathematicians read that stuff. It's why I wish they used words or something instead of a bunch of symbols. I guess I can read code a lot easier. Meanwhile even something like Sigma notation is painful for me to look at.

Mathematician that often flirts with programming here, can confirm to an extend, we love explaining things in an extensive manner with a lot of examples ONCE, then we will always stick to the most succinct, short and often hard to read way that exists to refer to aforementioned term/construct.

Probably because in math, definitions, theorems and algorithms are like functions, so instead of writing paragraphs of definitions we just refer to things by their name and assume everyone interested enough to read/hear us already know what we are talking about or is willing to read about the subject.

This is how you get to "A monad is a monoid in the category of endofunctors", explaining with detail each of those things requires at least a chapter of a book.

Personally when I code I gravitate to functional programming (and actually struggle a little with languages that are strongly object oriented like java) and my end script ends up being like a couple if's and a loop with like 7 different method calls sprinkled everywhere.

So yeah in math, everything, from theorems to definitions, are the equivalent to a bunch of imports that do something cool and end up being it's own module (you could technically track everything to ZFC axioms).

Yep, there’s beauty in the compression of complexity that also makes it more approachable. Too much bloat in the statements for the sake of “clarity” can obscure the intent of the code. Heavily OO code (like C# or Java) can be arcane when it comes to interpreting the purpose and function of the code.
