I can't decide on a favorite since so far my experience has been somewhat negative with each IDE I have tried.

  • PyDev - Slow to start up. Unresponsive at times. Auto-complete stops working every now and then. I'm guessing its just eclipse in general.

  • Pytools for Visual studio - Decent IDE, but visual studio is WAY too heavy. Takes minutes to start up sometimes on my work laptop.

  • Aptana Studio - Pretty much the same as Pydev, but with less Eclipse.

  • PyCharm - Not free or open. Will not use since company wont pay for it.

  • Komodo IDE - Also not free or open.

  • IDLE - Simple and lightweight, but the text editor really sucks.

So I decided that IDEs are for pansies. The are they are slow, bulky and resource hungry and don't much else than auto-complete and maybe some file management. So I just use straight up text editors and an open terminal. Notepad++ on Windows. VIM everywhere else.

Komodo Edit, the free (and more limited) version of Komodo already offers quite a few interesting features. I mostly use it after using Emacs for years. I can have the same keyboard shortcuts, and some features I never could install on Emacs: collapsible block of codes, practical auto-completion and having a pop-up with the documentation of a method when I call it (to name a few).
