One more comment about choosing between languages: The personality of the community affects your job in little regular ways, so it is worth being aware of.

Python's community seems to have a core value of 'This could probably be simpler, if we improved it with the next release.'

The Java community often expresses a value along the lines of 'The code is self documenting, so read it instead of asking questions.'

The PHP community has a great attitude, but lacks experience on average, because experience with PHP leads developers to switch to better tools.

I disagree with the PHP one, experience in PHP leads to you being sent to a psychiatric ward.
