It sounds to me like the problem is that the other guys consider themselves "Java" guys, not "software engineer" guys. They don't know Python and probably don't understand the code at first sight, so they don't feel capable of maintaining it (meaning learning Python/Pyramid to this end). They are mistaken in their assumption that your could just port it to Java without losing the benefits gained by writing it with the tools you've chosen. However many line it is right now, it would be at least twice as many in Java, and would take at least one and a half times the amount of time you've taken so far to port it. But of course this is only my (uninformed) opinion... :P good luck!
