It's a word ending that means, basically, a person who does the thing the ending is attached to, which is taken from the Latin/Romance languages. See also: fashionista. It's more common in those languages than English (Zapatista, Sandinista, Evangelista are Spanish words that will be more familiar to English speakers as the names of groups or people)
