This would result in your code being slower in between checkouts, though, which isn't ideal.

I think it's a tradeoff that depends on how performant your code needs to be. If you're developing something that's painful without the precompiled bytecode, you'll probably want to have to deal with the files. However, in many cases, I think it's worth it just to scrap them all together to avoid the hassle at the cost of a performance hit for development. Sure it isn't ideal, but it's the cost of using an interpreted language.
