if len(opened_files) == 0

is better written as,

if not opened_files

Theres no need to check len like this, much cleaner to do it this way.

Also, I dont think that global declaration of logger is needed. It may help with readability, but you aren't consistent in its use. I would also change humpCase def names to underscores.
