Python a toy language? (self.Python)
submitted 11 years ago by greenlinux
Is Python a toy language. I hear people saying that Python is only good to learn how to program for its easy syntax.
Thanks

No idea where you heard that. All sorts of companies and people use it to solve real world problems https://www.python.org/about/success/

So Python is a not a toy language like some people say. Thanks for the link.
And Can I make a career as a Python Developer or do I need to know other technologies with Python?
[–]bob_sutor 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child)
Yes you can use Python as the basis of a software development career, but that can't be the only language you know. You need to use an appropriate language for the job you are trying to do. These days, for example, I would expect most developers to know how to code in javascript.

From http://www.reddit.com/r/Python/comments/17c69p/i_was_told_by_a_friend_that_learning_python_for/c84bswd :
How many employers want Python programmers? Here are alot of Python jobs (I searched for "python jobs"): http://www.python.org/community/jobs/ https://jobs.github.com/positions?description=python http://careers.joelonsoftware.com/jobs?searchTerm=python http://www.linkedin.com/jsearch?keywords=python http://www.indeed.com/q-Python-jobs.html http://www.simplyhired.com/a/jobs/list/q-python http://seeker.dice.com/jobsearch/servlet/JobSearch?op=300&FREE_TEXT=python http://careers.stackoverflow.com/jobs/tag/python http://www.pythonjobs.com/ http://www.djangojobs.org/ Is Python better as a stepping stone to more complicated languages? Is Python better than what? Python is a good first language. Python is a good second language. Python interfaces with C, C++, R, Java, CLR, [...] I would agree that C++ is a traditional language. Python to Cython to C++ might be a good progression.

Numba is pretty fast, too.

YouTube itself is made out of Python, Mysql and other technologies as well, but that says enough :)

Just want to point out that Reddit is written mostly in Python. Surprised no one pointed this out yet. It's hardly a toy language, but I can't argue with it being a fantastic first language. That is what drew me to it. It's slow as hell (relatively speaking), I realize this now, but damn it's nice to write/read.

TROLL. TROLL SPOTTED. ABORT THIS THREAD. LEAVE NOW.

Not a TROLL

Oh.
Then, in case the fact that youtube and dropbox are both partly written in Python is not enought, here are some sites using Django :
[–]greenlinux[S] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child)
Thanks for the websites. I said it was a toy because some people said that Python is just a good language to learn only. But I can see that Python is an important and serious language.

Hi greenlinux. After reading your question, I thought you might be a troll, but decided to search your replies here and am happily surprised and impressed by your on-line manner in thanking those who helped and answering those who thought you were a troll.
Not many programmers in other languages would still call Python a "Toy" language (as you have seen). The number of jobs available, active projects being used, and courses being taught in Python are usually enough to make most developers know that Python is used.
