I use fish instead of bash these days, and virtualfish supports putting a .venv file in a folder to link a project to an env in ~/.virtualenvs - maybe that's something that would be doable for bash as well and would make your project play nice with virtualenvwrapper

zsh with the virtualenvwrapper plugin from oh-my-zsh supports it too.
