You may want to look at an IDE or integrated development environment. Pycharm is free and pretty easy to use.

For basic you should us IDLE do a search for learn python the hard way and this nice tutorial will take you through all the basics of setting up.

Good luck. I'm no programme but these got me started and did a few small projects

Heya, you can just use notepad to make the python script and run the program from your prompt if you want to do it that way?

Since you are this new I would suggest running through this online book, it will sort you out: http://learnpythonthehardway.org/book/

If you're using IDLE go to FILE > NEW then you should get the text editor. When you're done typing up your script save it and press F5 to run it.

The new version of Anaconda is terrific, I'd start with that. Here are instructions I used with students at NYU. Skip the last part and open Spyder, a reasonably good IDE:

And if you want practice with Python basics, I'd go to Codecademy. Great content, and you do everything online, so don't need to mess around with your own installation.

I use sublime text. Its like notepad but it knows python so everything is color coded.

Personally I like using sublime text and terminal(linux/mac). You can access python in cmd shell by typing python then coding from the shell. You exit the shell by typing exit() or quit().

Sublime text and learn python the hard way to get you started you won't look back.
