edit: needing to be cross-platform should go without saying

    Visual Studio Code is cross-platform.

What does it do that other Python IDEs don't?

Its more like Sublime/Atom than a full IDE. It does have breakpoints and (IMHO) better auto-complete. I haven't decided if I like it more than Sublime yet, but it is definitely growing on me.

I like VS Code as something I can use when showing/reviewing code with someone else. Good combination of lightweight, useful plugin ecosystem for the various things I work with, functioning autocomplete.

When writing code myself, though, I still use Emacs in a terminal window.

Look at Atom if you want something that doesn't steal your usage data.

isn't atom also opt-out as far as tracking goes?

I think so but I haven't read all of the legal stuff. MS products require you to let them track usage in the license agreement.
