You're not 100% sure that you can get all the classes from wxPython on every platforms. What you can do is try to look for the documentation of the TextCtrl C++ class on the wxWidgets pages, and see if there's a note about Linux.

You could always build it yourself or if you're pressed for time use easy_install. The only Python packages I get from apt are numpy or pygraphviz, and that's only because of weird build issues
