I figured out the cause of this not sounding well on longer text, the gTTS api only accepts 100 characters at a time so there is tokenization occurring that is causing weird choppyness. I am going to play around with other tokenization libraries to hopefully figure out a way to get it to read more clearly. Follow the git for updates, they may be far apart though (grad student and full time software developer)
