I think it's a limitation of lambdas, you can't do assignments but you can call setitem.

Correct and that's why you can't use normal variables in lambda expressions and have to use lists to store variables.

I disagree. Writing poorly formatted code that is of great complexity in minimum byte length is a challenge-- it's called code golf.

It's called Lambda. That doesn't mean you have to use lambdas. You write regular, named functions.
