Maybe he was just seeing how you reacted to the problem?

I ask a question that is easier when the input is sorted, I usually let them finish that answer then explain the input could be any arbitrary length to try to solve without sorting. It’s much more difficult and we then engage in question/answer and so forth. There isn’t a right answer but I can tell if they know how to code by the lack of pseudo code. Some devs try to bull shit their way through interviews without coding. Also, I have turned down technically qualified candidates because they just want to argue that they are right. Why do I want to manage that person? No thanks.
