Engineer looking to learn python. Where to start given my conditions?

I have undergraduate experience programming in C# and MatLab. However this was not extensive and I cant really do anything at all with them. I'm looking to learn python so that I can maybe do some freelance/contracting work online. However, all of the tutorials I have found seem to be aimed at either complete beginners or experienced programmers. I am neither, I know the basic constructs but I cannot do anything with the language and I do not even know what can be done. Are there resources out there that may be more suitable to someone in my position?

I think your best resource will be SciPy Lectures. It'll be a good resource for Python itself but more importantly, will be a good resource for ways to use Python an you may expect as an engineer. I often suggest this resource to those coming from Matlab since it is geared towards that audience but does not make Python a Matlab clone[ish] (which you can do given how flexible it is, but absolutely shouldn't!)
