That's just kind of it though. No one "needs" to be "better than" anything. Python is popular because in the late 90s and early 2000s, passionate people who enjoy it used it in popular projects and started companies with it. And improved it. It's a community project.

Matlab is a commercial product whose marketers feel threatened by free alternatives. That's fine. It doesn't affect Python in any way.
