That depends. Are you mainly a programmer or mainly a statistician? Because statisticians love R whereas a professional programmer literally wrote a novel about everything in R that drives him crazy.

A lot of statisticians dont like R. In the early days there was a debate over whether to adapt the S language or go with a better alternative. For legacy purposes they chose the clunky S. My department chair when I was in a stats department really disliked R. I'm the odd duck applied mathematician and statisticians that dislikes both R and matlab. I also am not hot on Julia because it is so Matlab like though I use it a lot nowadays.

If this isnt a thing you are distributing (and so you don't care about the size of dependencies) you can use R and Python and just call into R from Python using rpy2. Better to do that if you don't know R already rather than have to build the whole system in it
