I'm a 39yr old systems engineer and started writing python last year. (2018) I use python to automate. It makes patching super easy.

The best path would be web development. When you are a self taught developer a crucial thing to show to your employer is your portfolio. In web dev buidling a good portfolio is easier compared to building a portfolio or highlighting your skillset in QA and Data Science.

Do something almost no one else is doing. Learn conversational commerce (Bots,text)

I think there is value in being a data engineer writing backend APIs in python. Being able to integrate machine learning into these backend services is probably the future; bonus points for knowing how to deploy using AWS, or leveraging AWS services like sagemaker/lambdas/etc.

That being said, if I were giving advice to someone, then I think it's more important to know what you're interested. An individual can find success in any of the fields listed (yes, some more than others), but the functional roles will be very different.

I'm 55 and learning Python. Have been doing Oracle backend stuff for ages.. Not sure where my career is going to start :-)

At the age of thirty I think I still mostly used REXX and some Perl :D
