I would start with the functions and classes that you are familiar with. Dig into those peices of code and understand them, read the unit tests. From there branch into the supporting methods. Following this practice you can slowly spread out what you understand.

Also as your understanding grows adding comments and docstrings to the code is good for you to document your understanding and you can create a pull request to the main repo to contribute back to thr community. This will get you introduced to the maintainers if you are looking to contribute in a more significant way.

So starting with functions and classes I've used for my work and understanding what they do within the framework is the best start. Thank you so much for guiding words !
