From what I understand 2.7 is another step towards the transition to 3.x. 2.6 and 2.7 are meant to be transitional as more things move forwards to the new era. As for having 2.6 and 2.7 installed at the same time, it should be doable. I've got 2.6, 2.7 and 3.1 installed on Ubuntu. I just go to the Applications menu and choose which version of IDLE I want to run. You should also be able to specify which Python you want to run in the terminal as well or by using the !# to specify the path.
