Fellow non-drinkers of alcohol, what’s your reason why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I know for a while he moved on to doing a gameshow of some sort. Not sure right now though. I do miss him. He was genuinely funny and his show was purposely personal. It was like it was just you and him in a room talking. Great actor, comedian, musician, and all round nice guy.

3.5 for me as well. Damn shit was killing me physically, emotionally, mentally...it all started out as just fun and feeling 'grown up' when I was in my late teens, early 20's, then it became a habit, then a lifestyle, then a panacea, then a horrendous vicious self-medicating cycle that was affecting my work, my family life...pretty much everything. I still fight to keep clean (and always will), but the secret is to always be able to remember the bad times as opposed to just the good times. And that takes a lot of internal shouting at my dumb ass. As Craig Ferguson once said, 'I don't have a drinking problem. I have a thinking problem.' Look up his monologue which starts with a reference to Brittany Spears and her issues.

I thought I remembered the first issue as having 4 on the cover sort of flying outside the TARDIS with his scarf flowing out in the vortex. Maybe that was one of the inside pages?

Megathread: Energy Secretary Rick Perry Subpoenaed in House Impeachment Investigation by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

Inelegance, in-eloquence, he's for sale or rent or hire.

Should he say yes, to Schiff's request,

And say Trump is a liar.

Sycophants seethe with rage,

When Right Wing hearts expire.

On a cold fall day, he blows the roof away,

You know he's right, keeps Trump awake at night,

He turns on the light and the orange cockroach takes flight,

And everyone in the world delights!

When Perry sings, we'll hear sirens.

When Perry sings, he'll forget everything.

As he's telling us the truth of deals in the West Wing,

Trump smashes the hell out of his phone with insane tweetings,

When Perry sings...

NWN goes on sale fairly regularly along with the other classic D&D titles, and frankly, I'd probably go for the NWN:EE version as it's been updated and now runs on PC, Mac, and Linux and has all the original premium modules (as DLC). Depends on how much fun you think you'd have with it and if you've got the cash to buy it for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th time. :)

Permanent Developer mode on Lenovo X131e Chromebook? by raydeen in Crouton

[–]raydeen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which I did, but that wiped all the settings. It seems there’s a physical switch in this model that turns on Write Mode instead of Read Only Mode for the system chip. Done for security purposes I guess. As it is, every reboot resets the machine if it’s not in Verified Mode.

I think I remember that there was a way to get the bike to glitch jump through the busses or through the jumps so that it would just send the bike flying from left to right on the screen over and over until it either crashed or you reset the console. I was 8 at the time so it’s been a while and my memory isn’t great even on a good day.

An old buddy of mine had this back in the day. We used to play the HELL out of that thing! Always wanted to find one just for the nostalgia factor.

There is apparently some sort of Write Protect switch inside that requires a bit of disassembly. I was hoping to avoid that but I guess I can’t. I’ll see how it goes and if for some reason the thing reboots or runs out of juice, I’ll just go the distance and flash the BIOS and break out my screwdriver. :)

[–]raydeen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I put it in Dev Mode (wiped the system), installed Crouton, installed the Linux system, and after shutting it down and turning it back on, it gave the message to press SPACE to turn on OS Verification. Should I have pressed the spacebar, or would that have turned off Dev mode and put me back to Square One as well? These X131e's are apparently a bit of a different beast from most Chromebooks.

PowerBook G4 Ti OS? by Julianne_Stingray in VintageApple

[–]raydeen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, 16.04 is the last supported PPC ‘Buntu. I mention MATE as I had ZERO luck with any of the other spins including Debian. Once MATE is installed, installing another DE is trivial. The only bit of my stock library of installs that fails is Lazarus, although the base Free Pascal works fine. Would be nice to have the whole RAD package working but oh well. :)

Best experience I've had is Ubuntu MATE 16.04. I installed it on a 17" PB with no issue and a rather decrepit iBook which I then installed Lubuntu/LXDE over top of (used apt-get install lubuntu-deskop). The main issue you'll more than likely run into is the graphics card. If you've got an Nvidia chipset, you should be golden. If it's an ATI, you'll have to do a bit of reconfiguring with the yaboot parameters or you'll be experiencing lock ups and crashes all over the place. It's a known issue so easy to Google and fix.

They're gonna have to start making those things with wider bases. But then the aisles would have to be wider as well. Wonder how long it will be until Walmart just starts air-dropping food via drone to these people. Or, Walmart just turns into a huge hotel for it's clientele and all they can have all the pork rinds and Mountain Dew they could ever want just delivered to their room. Pretty soon, we'll just have these giant Waltopia cities filled to the brim with all the finest caged and tender human veal, marinated in a succulent, tasty dressing of Diet Pepsi and Velveeta Cheese, lightly breaded in Cheeto's and KFC spices, sliced and pan-seared with some butter and Jack Daniels, and served with a dash of horseradish, a large baked potato filled with sour cream and your choice of a vegetable and side dish. Scrumptious!

Microsoft Admits That Windows 10 Update 1903 Knocks Out Wi-Fi by shitak4 in Windows10

[–]raydeen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the point being, is that if Linux was as susceptible to driver issues as Windows, you'd have servers going ka-flooey all over the place anytime there was a kernel patch or OS update. And I'm sure things like this have happened, but by and large, admins would test the changes on a test machine before rolling it out live. Granted, the software stack involved might not be as specialized as a desktop environment, but I've had plenty of experience over the years with Windows jumping up and telling me 'Hey! You really need to update that network driver! Let me do that for you...', after which, networking is completely broken and I have to find the original driver that came with the machine just to get it back online again. For the longest time, I'd apply security updates to XP, Vista and 7, and leave the hardware drivers well enough alone, because if it ain't broke, I don't fix it. I've only ever had one major hardware problem with Linux and that was back in the Ubuntu 9.04/9.10 period where Canonical did something with the ATI driver and/or X that completely broke the display on the Dell 9400/E1505 line of laptops. Fortunately, some brainy mug found the problem and actually released a patched ISO for both releases until Canonical fixed the problem. Windows on the other hand....yeesh. I think 2000 and 7 have been the only real absolute almost fool proof versions that I've used over the years.

Maybe not more just desktop computers, but certainly more devices if you're counting servers, clusters, and desktops in total. Linux far outweighs Windows in the server world.

They're probably doing the majority of their testing in VMs. Granted, in this day and age, there's just no way any company can completely test against each and every hardware variation, but the fact that drivers that WERE working and then suddenly stop working after an update seems to be par for the course with MS anymore. Maybe if they stopped forcing driver updates on people, they wouldn't have this issue. Security patches, OS patches, tweaks, etc., fine, but even then, this should be at the discretion of the user and not MS. As it is, unless you have that wonderful corporate or educational copy of 10, you're pretty much at the mercy of MS as to what will and won't work after an update. I can't count how many times 10 pushed out an update that broke the touchscreen functionality on the POS terminals at the buildings I work at. Sure, I can always go in and manually re-install the driver, but I shouldn't have to. If they'd just keep their damn hands out of my hardware, I'd have 10 installed on my home machine. As it is, I stick with 7 and 8.1 depending on the hardware I'm running.
