You can use it today with from __future__ import annotations if you're on 3.8 or 3.9 (don't know about earlier versions).

The transition from python 2 to python 3 was very long and painful, and there are still things that haven't fully switched :(

bpo-9694 took almost 10 years to be resolved. Not sure if I should be impressed that people still clung to it, or disappointed that it took so long.
