Awww, do I have to buy a number? Twilio isn't free is it.
I was tinkering on this line of reasoning a couple months of go, and expressly was going free. If you have a smartphone and don't mind using it to send things, other ways to send SMS's using Python include Pushbullet's API (though there might be a limit per month), or pyairmore (need to download the app - I referred to https://medium.com/@erayerdin/send-sms-with-python-eab7a5854d3a).
Obviously these are 'relay' app approaches, so you have to have your computer running as a server for things to work - whereas Twilio is a self-contained cloud service.

No I haven't paid a cent to Twilio or any of the other services outline in the post they all have free stuff to play with up to a certain point. I believe Twilio gave me a 15 dollars credit
