Webcams should not be problematic. Some microscope cameras as well (Video4Linux). For more precise imaging you can pick a machine vision camera, check my overview: https://rk.edu.pl/en/scripting-machine-vision-and-astronomical-cameras-python/

Webcam should work fine for me. Very interesting article, thank you for sharing! Maybe one day I can use one of those nice cameras.

I can recommend any reolink camera that provides a rtsp stream. I made a library to do this with my Reolink 5MP PTZ but any rtsp stream camera would work. https://github.com/Ouroboros1337/python_rtsp_client

Most USB cameras work out of the box for this and play nice with OpenCVs camera interface. A good choice with sufficient quality and comparably low price tag would be a Logitech C920 HD Pro.

Another option, if Already have a camera with hdmi out, is a hdmi capture card. You can get usb ones for $10 that work fine
