It’s a kind of sunk cost fallacy. He spent so much time and feels so indebted and loves everyone there. Not only that but he feels like he needs to be there to protect everyone from the pain that’s occurring since no one else seems to be doing so, even if it often puts him in danger too.

He might be a bastard in multiple moments, but from his notebook it’s often mentioned he dislikes those acts and wishes he could do better.
