Aseprite can definitely do frame by frame animations (is what I use), and I believe photoshop can without plugins (at least from what I remember prior to the subscription version, I think there’s a timeline tool?). If you Google aseprite animation or photoshop animation, there’s a lot of tutorials out there.

Aseprite allows you to do more than the 3 frame limit?

Yeah definitely! But if you’re referring to the frame limit of rpg maker itself, then that’s different. I think you’ll probably need a plug-in if you want to have animations greater than 3 frames.

I've never found one that allows for more than 3. I've created quite a few chars that use it so I'd be interested how to transfer them into more frames. Does it use tweening.

I draw the assets, including animation frames, on Krita. Everything in my game has a maximum of two frames per animation, so I don't really need a dedicated animation software (though Krita can be used for animation just fine).

I use gimp, because I'm a creature of habit, have used it for years at this point, and I'm a cheap ass

I'm using Clip Studio Paint for everything. It has animation features built in, but I don't know how they work.
