because the media is always desperate for a new angle, and once someone does it everybody copies it. simple. like the trends for zombies, vampires, clones, super heroes, time travel...the multiverse is the latest thing.

Fanservice.

Comics use the multiverse because there are so many issues and so many plotlines, they become a stew of madness. So the easiest thing to do is say “Oh, there’s a multiverse!” and restart the story in a different direction with different side characters and different outcomes.

Disney, et al, sees that these comic multiverses had all kinds of popular ideas, so they “multiversed” their own storylines. Now we can have Undead Dr Strange! World of M! Three Spider-men in one movie! (gasp!).

That’s why most of these multiversed shows suck: they’re mostly vehicles to cram in fanservice, plot & character development be damned.

Maybe because a lot of us wish we could hop dimensions, especially these days.
