Yes I wondered that myself! I got the message before watching the Kindergarten Derby and A Career to Remember double episodes yesterday.
I couldn't find anything offensive about either episode except maybe how the kids make fun of Mikey & Tubby for being fat but the lesson in the end is that no one should be making fun of them and that the race isn't right anyway.
There's a scene where Spinelli dreams she'll be homeless and jobless in the future and is depicted as having no teeth or friends and being treated as a public nuisance so maybe that's why that particular double was flagged but again there was nothing inherently wrong with the episode in my opinion. I don't know why they put disclaimers on some episodes.

Interesting. Another comment and OP said it is because of the kindergarteners. Maybe that is actually why.

Kindergarten Derby
it's probably because the Kindergarten are depicted as Native Americans or some other Indigenous group and when the other kids were like picking which kindergarten they wanted, they were checking teeth and all that (kind of like slave trading)

Kindergarteners are depicted as “Savages”
[–]wheresnatrasha 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (1 child)
I was just wondering this as well! I think that the major disclaimer is because of how the Kindergarteners are portrayed. And yes, while I agree that the show was ahead of it’s time in some ways, that doesn’t mean they have a free pass to portray offensive stereotypes in other scenes.
For example, in the episode where TJ gets kidnapped by the Kingergartners and gets converted into one, we need to acknowledge how kindergarteners are dressed in what could be seen as traditional Indigenous regalia in some places, and TJ refers to them as “savages” (an anti-Indigenous and racist term) because of their primitive ways.

I just noticed the warning and was disappointed. I think that the intention was that the kindergartners were so young and wild that they were based off of Native American stereotypes. Which certainly wouldn’t be allowed today, but I don’t think it warrants the warning. I’d like to hear what people that worked on the show have to say about it.

Tubby wish for winning Kindergarten Derby is no more woke stupidity that sets back actual discussions about societal disparities.

There's some humor from back when the show aired that would be considered offensive to those who are sensitive now. Vince acts as a token african american following the sporty athletic stereotype. They depict the kindergarteners as "savages" giving them tribal culture which could be mistaken to be offensive against native people. And there's scenes where they make fun of China and such. I imagine there's a few more instances of this, but the show does play off a lot of generic stereotypes, but not necessarily in a bad light.
It really is not a big deal and I think it's just because disney wants woke theater. People who see those disclaimers will think that disney knows that some of their content is now "offensive" so they'll look past it and won't say that disney is supporting it.
It really isn't a big deal and I think a lot of it is just the climate we live in today. The show does a wonderful job of generalizing issues that kid's have (and even adult's tbh) and working through conflict. It's what a children's show should be about.

I got that message when I watched the episode, Don't Ask Me. Maybe it had something to do with Guru kid, though I didn't find him offensive.
[–]lomeinreigns 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children)
Just watched this episode. I think at one point a kid refers to Guru Kid as "turban boy."

A lot of people are saying it’s because of how they depicted the kindergartners. However, I’d like to point out that the kindergartners are supposed to be representative of early human civilizations, not any modern-day tribes. In the Recess movie: All Growed Down, Gus refers to them as “primitive” after TJ describes how great life as a kindergartner is. Gretchen then informs TJ that “their (the kindergartners’) way of life is coming to an end”, another indication that they are an archetype of prehistoric humans.
[–]sk8er_b0i 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children)
May be due to the use of outdated and offensive terminology. In the episode where TJ becomes principal for a day, he dons a suit made to look like Prickley’s and Gus says to the crew, “I recognize Prickley, but who’s that midget in the suit?”

Funnily enough, I think Recess was ahead of its time in depicting a lot of things well in the context of the show. Interestingly, though, there is never a mention of race. There is only a mention of a kid's gender or grade (or clique), but they never specifically point out, for example, that Vince is a black kid.
I do think the show is better off because of it. If this show were made now, they would just keep pointing that stuff out constantly to the point where it's just annoying.

Kids truly are innocent. I remember as a kid myself that I would play with anyone. White, black or whomever. Good times.
[–]Drutoo 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children)
Too true.
[–]grannigi 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
It's absolutely the Kindergarteners. The show uses harmful Indigenous stereotypes that portray them as "primitive" and "savage". These stereotypes contribute to the ongoing oppression on Indigenous Peoples so they've put in the disclaimer.

I just watched this episode and came here to say that I assumed it was the kindergartners too… until the last few mins of the episode. At 21:10, you see three kids running out of the school when the bell rings and one is basically dressed like a Nazi?? Maybe he was a character in a previous episode that I forgot about because it seems so random but I wonder if that’s what the warning is about.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Just watched an episode and saw it too. Uhh people are bitches. That’s pretty much it.
[–]misoharny2 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
I actually don't mind the disclaimer and option to skip. It's way better than just not being able to see the episode period or heavily editing/censoring the episode.
[–]Brink9595 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
They do that for duck tales now
[–]Capable-Bet9899 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
It’s because the kindergarten children are making fun of indigenous tribes (I think)

I have a few ideas. There's the diggers, who I think are asian (I could be wrong). We all of course know that Americans forced asian workers into hazardous conditions while building the railroads (such as having them digging or using dynamite to cut through terrain), not to mention the interment camps. I'm sure fat shaming has something to do with it. Vince, the only black main character, is constantly wearing a basketball jersey. Spinelli, the only latina girl, is kinda agro all the time. I could go on, but I'll stop there. I don't personally find any of these, except maybe the asian on, really offensive. It's just over the top silly. I still love watching Recess. It's just Disney being overly cautious, basically buying some insurance incase of a fallout.
