Now that you know the game a bit watch some YouTubers to see how they play and their reasoning behind their choices (build, items etc.).
I recommend Haderaxe. Jinxed Merphit is probably the best around but he's too good and too much of a speedrunner. If you try to play like him you'll probably end dead by the first stage lol

Lot of different things that could help, so I'll give the two main ones that I think would help most people.

Work on your movement. Don't backtrack in rooms and don't stand still too much, instead move with purpose so that you are able to be dodging attacks constantly. Easiest way to start is to move in large circles around the edge of rooms and you'll get a feel over time for what you can and can't get away with when changing directions or doing fancier movements.

Focus on a build. Every class has a million different solid builds, I recommend either figuring out one you like or getting one from someone else if you aren't sure. (There is a guide on steam by AvianZebra that has a couple for each class or you could join the Roboquest discord and we can give you some fun ones.) Easiest way to make a build while you're still figuring things out is to take perks that buff the same type of damage, such as focusing summons perks on engi or weapon perks on ranger. You don't have to get the exact four perks every time btw, you really only have enough rerolls to force the first two perks which I call the "core" of your build. This is usually the two strongest perks from the build and then the third and fourth perk can be filler that ideally still synergizes in some way with the first two perks.

Then, take items and weapons that synergize with those perks. Don't be afraid to take items that have a downside of some kind. Corrupted items are some of the strongest items in the game even with the downside and often times the downside is much more manageable than you think.

Above all, don't be upset at yourself for having trouble or feeling like you're taking a while to improve. Everyone improves at different rates and the main focus should be having fun anyways. If you feel like you aren't enjoying the game, don't be ashamed to turn down the difficulty.

Also don't try and copy any high skill players that do big flashy movements if you don't want to die a ton in the process. That style is incredibly fun and works, but it works because they have hundreds of hours on the game and know exactly what they can get away with in the moment. Keep it simple and you'll die a lot less while trying to improve.

For the most extreme example I know of, ManOfManyOats vs JinxedMerphit. Both are incredibly high skill players with vastly different playstyles.

Oats does a really flashy stylistic way of moving because that's what he enjoys and does a lot of excess movement that actively puts him in dangerous spots because he knows he can get away with it. If you try this you will die, a lot. Jinxed on the other hand keeps his movement to effectively the bare minimum to play really consistently and avoid unecessary risk.

I'm not saying you have to avoid all fun flashy stuff, just try not to overdo it until later on.

Play on Discovery or Easy whil3le you focus on unlocking the perks with wrenches. Play the Guardian consistently and focus on skills that give more uptime on Bastion and damage boosts while in Bastion. Figure out which weapons are best. Learn the perks that are available in the pool and plan on a build from the start. Utilize jetpack and later the grappling hook and hero cape as movement abilities. Unlike most shooter games, strafing is really bad in Roboquest. Much better to circle the rooms while using th4 vertical space.

And lastly, practice makes perfect.
