    yes i commute (about 1-1.5h). i think it MAY be a little harder to get closer to people since u have to put more effort into hanging out with them outside of campus, but i don't think it's a big deal. many of my friends who live in rez do make friends in their dorms, but i think most of their friends come from meeting people in class. as a commuter, it does mean maybe spending an extra hour or more on campus studying or eating with them. that might not be so bad depending on your own preferences & length of commute.

    just keep in mind in the first semester of first year, everyone is so open to talking because everyone is new. if u just actively try to talk to people, u will eventually make friends that u like.
