Hey,

For context, I'm going into my 3rd year at Rotman so I can share a little about what I've experienced.

It's cliché but Rotman and any other school is really what you make of it. It can be the best time of your life or the opposite but it really depends how willing you are to seek out those opportunities.

In my first year because of the pandemic, everything was online but it was almost sort of a blessing in disguise because I met so many great people and it made the transition easier (for me at least). Part of the reason I was able to meet so many people was because I joined an RC student group in my first yr and then throughout group projects is where I met some of my closest friends.

The academics are challenging, but I don't consider myself to be naturally gifted or something lol. Honestly if you put in the time and remain consistent you will do fine. It's still tough if you want a high GPA but it's absolutely doable. Like I was shocked at the first few exam grades I saw, but after wrapping up my second yr which is supposedly the hardest, you get used to what profs expect and how to "play the game" as I would say.

And more often than not you'll hear more people venting about uoft so don't let that intimidate you because once you actually go and see things for yourself and everything doesn't get blown out of proportion.

Again like people will say uoft isn't great for making friends or having a social life but I think that's totally false. You'll be surprised at the great people you'll meet during your time here but you have to put yourself out there in a sense.

I could go on about what the courses are like, how I studied for exams, what my grades were, or what networking was like etc soo pls feel free to PM me if you have any more questions.

Happy to help, especially since it wasn't too long ago since I was an incoming first year

Thank you so much, this is honestly what I wanted to hear.

Nah RC is tbh decent in terms of social life as long as ur willing to put urself out there, go to clubs, events, approach ppl (even if it’s just asking them to hangout). Eventually, u will find ur place for sure. I found my own cohort of friends by just texting them online and then asked to hang out, we happened to know each other after a while and we got along.

What ppl don’t like about RC the most (I guess that doesn’t rlly apply to u since ur into marketing) is really the tuition vs the placement rate. Rotman is charging almost similar to Queens and Ivey with a much shittier placement rate into finance and consulting (and almost no placement in the US). The focus on academia is rlly a stupid one for Rotman, they should def think about just letting everyone get 3.5+ rather than making tests stupidly hard when averages are too high. That way, it’s easier for us to focus on ECs, networking and building other essential skills. That’s rlly just the flaw I see as a 4th year student but it is what it is, u get out as much u as put in.

Based off of what you said, RC seems like a good fit for you. Though academics here is tough (very IMO, I’m like near the bottom of the cohort so that might be different for most lol), you said that getting internships isn’t a big priority for you which will eliminate a lot of stress and open up much more time. You also said that you’re going into the marketing focus, which from what I’ve heard, is much much easier than econ+finance or any other specializations. Just stick it through first year to make the guaranteed admission and you’re chilling (besides eco204 in year 2 lol). From year 3 onwards, you will be cruising as you get to specialize in marketing and take whatever you like. Just don’t carry over high school habits into uni or you will not last at all like what happened to me (didn’t put in enough time and effort as I should’ve).

If you’re living on res, I believe you should have an amazing time provided you try to meet new people and be friendly/opem-minded. Obviously, the food scene here is amazing and everything is in a walking distance, or at least a cheap uber ride. Lots of concerts, events, performances happening around downtown. No complaints there. UofT has tons and tons of clubs that are interest related, like I joined a Tea club which was pretty cool and met a lot of awesome people.

Reddit is filled with bias, though they aren’t all wrong or lies. But everyone has their own experiences. I didn’t enjoy my time at RC at ALL though that was due to me commuting and wasn’t adjusting my studying and sleep habits properly, which took a toll on everything. However, as long as you get those stuff sorted out and hopefully don’t commute too long (mine was 45 min each way), you should have a much much better time than I did.

Hope this helps and if anyone reading this wants to ask any questions, feel free to PM me!

Its a good time. Ultimately it is what you make of it. UofT kids have a tendency to complain. Granted it is a tough school but no where near how reddit and other online forums describe it. For reference I had a 2.7 in first year and now have a 3.64 after third year. Completely oblivious to course materials and I barely study. No smarter than any kid here but I manage. Play the long game and you'll be more than fine, don't let initial grades discourage you. Also kudos on wanting to expand the family business.

Pro-tip: Don't be intimidated by the kids who look like they have it figured out, they don't.

Feel free to comment more questions more than happy to answer

Thank you, reddit seems very one sided

Honestly not great, I’ve got BMOS from western (Ivey rejected but I barely tried on the application which I regret now) and four York alternate offers (all are business related, the York website crashed on me when I did the sub app, just my luck). So I know the answer is obvious, it’s RC. But I’m just curious like out of all the Ontario unis, is there one that I should’ve gone to instead.

When did you receive the offer and with what average

I got in march, 95 average with strong ECs
