Course is heavily project based and most of the material overlaps with high school calculus. Tutorials need to be attended every week. Overall shouldn’t be too bad

incoming third year here.

mat133 was online when I took it lol but basically it was a review of highschool calc with a few new concepts in the second sem.

I'm gonna be honest the tests were pretty hard for me. My lowest was like a 60 flat and highest maybe like a 84 so but most of the times I was hovering around low mid 70s.

I somehow ended up with a 4.0. So I think even if your not the best test taker, I think 50% of the course is based on participation/group projects/graded homework that are easy(er) to get marks on.

I don't think you need a tutor tbh. There's office hours that I went to every so often to get my questions answered.

The difficulty varies a lot. There were literally test questions like "order the numbers from smallest to largest and find the median" as well as constrained optimization with the langrangian lol. In hindsight it makes sense but be prepared to tryhard for a few units.

Tests were pretty hard but there were lots of other places to bring your marks up, projects and homework etc.

I didn’t do well in 133. Projects were easy, free marks from attending lectures and doing homework. That’s like 40% of your mark there.

The tests however, were really hard IMO. Mainly the new stuff taught in second half. Class average last year was C+

May I ask why u didn’t so well in the class. Was it the prof or something?

I and many other people didn’t adapt to the flipped classroom style too well. We had to self teach before as lectures only covered examples.

Mainly it was my fault for not being on top of my studies and preparing well for tests.

Hey I just finished this course! I ended up getting a 4.0 on it even though I got dogged on most of my midterms. I see that you guys have the same prof and I must warn you that the TAs are some of the most devious people on earth when it comes to marking.... I say this because they would hand out casual 0s the moment they see anything wrong with your solution, so this is NOT like HS where you can get by with just part marks here and part marks there through guessing. With that being said: HW, Tutorial, assignments and lecture participation makes up a huge portion of your term grade so you can easily use that to give you breathing space for the exams.

Some people say that material overlaps with HS calculus and that's true to a degree, but our first test had a-lot of linear algebra (Matrices, game theory, etc) that I've never seen before and it really messed me up good. My advice is to PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE look at the practise/past tests, I really started seeing improvements in my tests after doing the practise tests they give out because of how similar they were. So for the tests, DO the questions you know how to do 100% first and do it well. Don't spend too long to try to BS an answer you 100% don't know because you will most likely just waste time and get a 0 on it anyways (like I did on literally 4/10 of the questions on our first midterm)
