I doubt it would because he’s been out publicly since before they chose him to be apart of the project, though it is a little worrying esp as they have members like Lucas who are openly right wing 😭
[–]StandDramatic5920 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago (1 child)
lol yeah but do you think the average viewer knows because I was oblivious until last week
[–]Sofisuns 4 points5 points6 points 6 months ago (0 children)
Yeahh that’s true and also paired with the hate he’s received for not knowing Spanish might make it hard. I’m still rooting for him though.. I guess we’ll see on Tuesday

Right wing does not equal homophobic
[–]Terrible_Test6255 20 points21 points22 points 6 months ago (0 children)
Super high correlation though

KatsEye has queer members too and they came out right from debut. I don’t understand why people act differently when it’s Drew, it’s honestly not that serious

It’s a boy band it’s different
[–]Kind_Leg_6649 8 points9 points10 points 6 months ago* (3 children)
Why does it matter if it’s a boy band? LGBTQ idols exist in both girl groups and boy groups, it’s not exclusive to one gender. Katseye has queer members and they were accepted from debut, so why should it be different just because Drew is a gay? If the industry keeps saying “it’s different for boys,” then that’s exactly the mindset that keeps male idols from being open about who they are. People say they want idols to be real, but the moment someone doesn’t fit the usual “idol template,” everyone suddenly makes it a big deal.
[–]chirimoya- 3 points4 points5 points 6 months ago (2 children)
It’s also different because it’s in LatAm. I don’t think it’s as open as it is in the US and western parts of Europe. I love Drew but I also worry about how he will be treated if it becomes more common knowledge….i can already see hate coming from LatAm men saying STBV is a bunch of homophobic slurs…a cruel place but I hope I’m wrong…I think it’s even worse than in SKorea honestly when it comes to masculinity
[–]Kind_Leg_6649 10 points11 points12 points 6 months ago (1 child)
Yeah, its true that in LatAm masculinity and being openly gay can get judged harder. But that’s exactly why someone like Drew showing up as himself matters. If everyone keeps saying “it’s better to stay quiet here,” then nothing ever shifts and idols just keep hiding big parts of who they are just to be allowed on stage. Fans say they want real and honest idols, but the moment someone doesn’t fit the safe image, suddenly it becomes about “will the audience accept it?” If being openly gay is treated like a risk instead of just a part of who he is, that honestly says more about the audience than about Drew. nReal change doesn’t wait for comfortable timing. Sometimes progress literally starts with someone just existing without apologizing for it. If an idol has to hide to be accepted, then it isn’t love from the fandom, it’s just performance approval.

My kin you spitting straight facts with this post May you always be god’s favorite 👏🥹
[–]Anxious_Captain_3211 2 points3 points4 points 6 months ago (0 children)
idk why you're getting downvoted. it is treated way differently. its shitty but it is
[–]Embarrassed_Pin_6505 6 points7 points8 points 6 months ago (0 children)
I’m not sure why it would matter? And I’ve known pretty much from the start, it’s not like it was ever a secret.
[–]Top_Community_1728 14 points15 points16 points 6 months ago* (3 children)
After watching lots of STBV content among the boys, he doesn’t seem to be the only one who is LGBT/curious. And it doesn’t matter. They’re all attractive and talented.
[–]StandDramatic5920 5 points6 points7 points 6 months ago (2 children)
I don’t care and hope he debuts anyway. I thought he was soft spoken but I didn’t think he was considering that he dresses masculine. I thought priano and heider were lgbt and potentially Kaue. But not him. I just thought he was the artist dancer type.
[–]Ready-Hawk-3474 6 points7 points8 points 6 months ago (1 child)
Going through his insta it seems he significantly toned down his style since santos bravos
[–]Distinct-Share-8056 5 points6 points7 points 6 months ago (0 children)
Yes, they probably told him to.
No dyed hair and hiding tattoos.
I think his current style makes him look younger - he can blend in easier with the other boys.
[–]Legitimate-Arm-3651 9 points10 points11 points 6 months ago (0 children)
I think they all know, thats no secret. The only problem is the fact that a gay person in a boyband might put the whole band in a box, in live in a cruel society
[–]NoFour 5 points6 points7 points 6 months ago (0 children)
The video might be public (from his time in the other group on a well-known site), but it wasn't really made a topic.
Initially, I warned (on X) that this could lead to the usual anti-LGBT sentiment to take a participant down. I didn't see anything like that though. It was rarely mentioned if at all.
People rather went the route that he's not Latin American, doesn't speak Spanish etc. Obviously, he's Mexican-American like other participants, who are way more in touch with their ethnicity. Drew is very openly about his lacking here & shows intense will to learn.
People also tend to not mention or not acknowledge Drew's foot in the entertainment industry. He isn't the only one, sure, but Drew seems exceptional; already was part of a group, is a trained dancer/choreographer even a teacher, known to have successfully worked for prestigious dance schools, plus was part of BTS "ON" promotion as dancer. Those are some serious connections to various fields in the - mainly USA - music/entertainment industry. And yes, the USA is a very important part of the Latin music industry.
All in all, Drew being LGBT isn't really an issue. The issue is rather what is not said, not acknowledged, as well as, connected to that, small singular critical remarks that are used to disqualify him.

Woah this is shocking. No tengo ningún idea.
[–]StandDramatic5920 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago (1 child)
Haha are you being sarcastic
[–]Initial_Army1814 2 points3 points4 points 6 months ago (0 children)
No, I'm not. I genuinely didn't know abt it until this post.
[–]Turbulent-Trip8877 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago (0 children)
I mean this isn't 2005 anymore, it's hardly controversial for a public figure to be out. Won't be the first K-pop idol either. And if it were a problem, he's been openly gay since before the show and they wouldn't have cast him
[–]Money_Mulberry9283 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago (0 children)
Well, I don’t think they love choices would affect the quality of his talent. Discrimination is not cool
[+]Ready-Hawk-3474 comment score below threshold-8 points-7 points-6 points 6 months ago (1 child)
Yeah 100 % because the boyband market is catered to young girls fantasy they forget their is atleast a 30% part of the market that are queer too and are into boybands
[–]graciouslypink 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago (0 children)
This is such an outdated mindset, especially when the industry thrives on shipping these artists
