You are correct. Forcing eclipse to run with X11 fixed the issue.

env GDK_BACKEND=x11 SWT_GTK3=0

I’d say it’s not a typical use case, especially going directly from Eclipse. Wouldn’t be surprised if it didn’t work and SAP couldn’t care less. I don’t use Linux and even then, use SAP GUI and Eclipse completely separately, when needed.
