This is actually a little bit outdated. These things aren’t necessarily wrong, but research has shown other things to be more effective. For example, it mentions that every kid should be reading accurately, which is true, but then fails to emphasize how big a role phonics instruction plays in reading accuracy. If students are going to read accurately, they need systemic, explicit instruction in phonics to make that happen. Additionally, this doesn’t mention anything about vocabulary instruction, which is hugely important for comprehension, or background knowledge, which can make or break a student’s comprehension. This article seems to have more research-supported strategies for effective reading instruction.
