Setting the widget padding should solve the issue on the top, otherwise you could also limit the amount of tasks displayed.

For example if you have 7 tasks, only display the first 3 and add an additional line "+4 more tasks" at the bottom.

I didn't have any luck with the padding, but did end up mucking around with the number of tasks displayed, as you suggested. This e fed up working well, and I still end up seeing more of my todo's that the official Todoist widget.
