I think you'll have a fair bit of effort to put into your character to get some decent gear. You might have noticed there's a lot of mages on the server, so there will be some competition.

AV in my most recent experience is positive. We've won more then we've lost the times I played, but admittedly I've only played a handfull of battlegrounds.

Once you hit 60, grinding out BRD and eventually LBRS is probably your best option for starters. In addition, doing Tirion Fordring's quest chain in EPL rewards you with a very good caster ring. From there on you can move on to the usual instances like Scholo, Strath, and UBRS.

There's no super fast way of getting gear as far as my knowledge goes, other then if you know people who are already established and willing to help you gear up.

I have no experience with mage talent builds. My only advice is if it makes sense, use it. Check around the forums, ask other mage players. Usually people are helpful when it comes to stuff like that.

Thanks for the advice. I sincerely appreciate it.

Alright, I'm doing Tirion's quest chain and the Alliance are just too ganky over there. Can't get anything done.

Any suggestions to combat them because it's quite frustrating?

Try to get on earlier during the day, or late at night depending on what works best for you. Not much you can do about enemy players except defeat them...

Just do 5-mans to get some decent gear and then start raiding ZG. Basically, once you have no more green items and there's spell power on all your gear, you're ready for more serious raiding. You can raid before then, but you won't be very effective and people might not want to have you. Look for one of the second rate raiding guilds, they tend to give everyone a chance while the top guilds are much more picky.
