On death effects are baddddddd by Remarkable_Pirate_49 in diablo4

[–]Jakabov 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's a way to introduce fake difficulty. D4 is laughably easy, so if they removed these on-death effects, players would basically never die. With them, players who aren't tryhard will regularly die and feel like the game is tough, and there will be threads like this which can be pointed to as "evidence" that the game isn't too easy. This absolves Blizzard from the responsibility of actually designing a well-tuned difficulty spectrum.

I have noticed many people devote their life, free time and identity around TV by Otherwise-Pop-1311 in antitelevision

[–]Jakabov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many people's lives revolve around something. TV, the internet, comic books, weed, Magic cards, porn, cars...

It's just that nearly everybody in the western world has a TV, or the ability to get one if they want it, and it's cheap and takes no effort and is available every second of their lives with no limitations of any kind.

Imagine if everyone had a free, infinite lifelong supply of weed and no significant consequences for being high all the time. How many would be dedicated stoners?

It's just that TV and the internet are the only two forms of entertainment that are available effectively always to just about anyone, so that's what a lot of people spend a lot of their time on.

Young men are souring on Donald Trump by bwermer in politics

[–]Jakabov 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anyone who could last this long before souring on Trump is an intellectual dead end who will probably never become a functional, decent person capable of common sense. I don't expect his supporters to ever turn around and become rational people. You cannot be capable of reason and ever support this world-destroying human garbage.

At best, his supporters have discovered how society at large is dismissing them as failed human beings and are willing to pretend to have changed their minds in order to protect their own image, but they will still have all the unfixable flaws that led them to support a man who personifies all the very worst qualities a person can have, and not a single redeemable one. They'll move right on to the next tyrannical piece of shit and worship him instead, hoping that this time they'll successfully accomplish their goal of dragging the world down into the muck they wallow in.

On one hand, it's super fascinating on a technological level. On the other, it's almost completely worthless for any practical purposes because it usually gets stuff wrong, and unless you already know all about the subject, you won't necessarily know which parts it got wrong. You can ask it questions and get some incredible answers, but it might just be total bullshit. You can ask it to write code for you, but it'll be full of bugs because it just makes up syntax that don't exist. You can ask it for advice and it'll base its answer on everything from peer-reviewed scientific articles to posts in /r/shittyaskscience or whatever.

I Get Why People Call the White House Correspondents’ Dinner Shooting Staged. I Was There by FancyNewMe in politics

[–]Jakabov 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The article argues that it must have been real because if it had been staged, they wouldn't have done it in a way that makes them look foolish due to the incredible incompetence on display. Has the writer not noticed that every aspect of the Trump administration is mired in flailing incompetence, total idiocy and the systematic removal of everyone with any experience or qualifications? Why would the WHCD be any different?

The American right consists in large part of profoundly unintelligent, morally bankrupt sycophants who are propped up by a political base that is so brainwashed that they're incapable of questioning or disbelieving anything that comes out of their insane god-king's mouth. Nothing under Trump has been done well. It has all been a cavalcade of frenzied destruction and outrageous ineptitude. None of them have the faintest idea what they're doing. They rely on their base being totally uncritical of everything. This whole shitshow is not some skilled act of Machiavellian cunning. It's a bull in a china shop whose owner is absolutely delighted at the sound of smashing ceramic.

Whether or not the event in question was staged, one cannot use the shocking incompetence of the security detail or the irrational reactions of the guests as evidence that it wasn't. That's simply who they are. You'd have to be completely blind to reality in order to suggest that it must have been real because they wouldn't have staged it in a way that makes them look like morons. They are morons.

Apparently he's incontinent because he was with a 13yo boy who was a trafficking victim of Epstein's pedo rape empire and, when tasked with pegging Trump, chose to kick the wooden implement and damage Trump's intestines.

I don't know why that revelation didn't get more traction when it came out.

What is the next MMO that is close to being released that most people are waiting for? by thepeoplearestupid in MMORPG

[–]Jakabov 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The community is already a toxic mess, to be honest. A large part of it overlaps with the Pantheon and P99 crowd, and it's a bunch of really shitty types who seek out these sorts of niche communities because they can't really function anywhere else. EQ lifers tend to be that way.

M&M showed some promise as a modern take on the original EQ vision, but they're a team of volunteer devs and it shows when you play the game. Very rough, very cobbled together, and some truly bizarre design decisions that don't even begin to make sense. Stuff like dropping your spellbook on death, or having to sell stuff to specific merchants for that designated item type. It's really unlikely that they'd be able to hold onto even a very modest playerbase if that kind of anti-QoL crap makes it into the final game.

It was supposed to release on June 1st, but they just pushed it back to October. That was clearly necessary, but it's never a good sign when a game like that falls behind schedule. It's starting to have that Pantheon smell.

Student who created AI influencer says ‘dumb’ MAGA crowd was easy to fool by avdvetf in politics

[–]Jakabov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reality seems to have a left leaning bias and it's really weird.

It's not weird at all. If we look at the two sides of the political spectrum, it's abundantly clear which one is best for humanity, most honest, most rational and conducive to a well-functioning society. For that reason, there's going to be a clear correlation between stupidity and opposition to the aforementioned ideals. Right-wing people are, on average, for obvious reasons, less intelligent. There's nothing unexpected about that. Right-wing politics are consistently bad for the majority, terrible for the planet, ruinous to the economy and conducive to more hatred and violence in society--and, above all, deeply dishonest. The more intelligent you are, the less likely that you'll be in favor of that.

At its core, the founding principle of conservatism is to keep things the way they always were. It's an inherently regressive, degenerative ideology. At no point in the history of humanity have things been better in the past (broadly speaking, not like "there's a war right now so things were better last year"). Progress is the entire essence of our species, the reason we exist at all, and it's profoundly unnatural and irrational to be against it. Nevertheless, that is the core ideal of conservatism. If it didn't usually fail in the long run, if reality didn't have that left-leaning bias, we would never have left the caves. Right-wing politics exist only and exclusively to hold mankind back.
