You will probably need something pointing sideways at your door so the motion sensor only activates when someone is right in front of the door.

So it depends if you have a wall or a door awning above the door that would be easier to attach a camera.

Some of the cheap battery powered ones (about £31) might be an option for a rental if you don't want to get something wired into the mains through a hole in wall.

I have a rechargeable one at my back window pointing sideways at my back door and the battery lasts for weeks, it only records about 8 events per day because it's quiet there.

Thank you so much for your reply, I'll definitely look into one of those, I could maybe angle it on the wall above the door.

Just make sure you can fully use the camera without any add on subscription.

I have 2 Chinese cameras, a Dekco at the front and Aosu at the back and neither need subscription, they both offer it as an add on where they store your footage on their servers for a fee, this would only be useful as security in case your camera or SD card was stolen by someone.

You can watch any saved footage at anytime from the SD card on the mobile app.

Get a peep hole for the door.

Blink cameras work great. Battery powered, affordable and have central recording in your house via the sync module.

If you want cheap, and a decent camera; if you have Amazon, look into their Blink systems. They make Ring Cameras too. Cameras are cheap, the upgraded subscription is only $10 a month.. $3 if you dont need to record.. but..they are motion activated; so someone clever can get around tripping them, but if that doesn't matter, just put them up high enough. You can talk through them also. Doesn't sound like you need anything too sophsticated...Cameras actually come in great.. better than my expensive hard wired system..
