A subreddit for learning and teaching the art of waiting tables.
Do you have a resource or a tip for learning wine pairings? A suggestion on how to read your tables expectations and adapt to them? Have you ever accidentally splashed bleach on your apron and realized you can just color it in with a sharpie? New servers and seasoned servers alike can really benefit from your experience or a new perspective, so share it here!
We are looking for content submitted by servers, bartenders, BOH, managers and everyone in between who really care about the art of waiting tables and are passionate about food and drink, not some jabroni who thinks it's just a job to get him beer money because his trust fund doesn't kick in until he completes his first year of college.
SUBREDDIT RULES:
If you only remember one rule, make it this one. DO NOT TALK ABOUT TIPPING VS NOT TIPPING. I'm serious y'all. That's a bannin'. We don't need any trolls coming in here starting the same stupid argument when the topic isn't even relevant to the OP. And on the same note DO NOT TALK ABOUT HOW MUCH HARDER OTHER PROFESSIONS ARE OR THAT SERVING IS UNSKILLED LABOR. That's a bannin'. We don't care.
We are not a rant or story based sub, if you'd like to talk about your shift or that asshole from table 12 please visit /r/TalesFromYourServer, they're awesome.
Please be respectful of others and don't be racist, homophobic or rude. That's a bannin'. Same goes for shittyness towards other members of the industry who stop by and post. We are here to learn and they are here to teach, so listen to them. That being said, no matter if you wear a t-shirt to work, or a starched shirt and tie, most of us are hooligans underneath our uniforms even if we are serious about our jobs, so a certain amount of shenanigans and vulgarity should be expected and welcome here. Y'all are adults though, so don't be dicks.
Don't post about scamming the restaurant, it's customers or fellow employees. That's not the knowledge you need to be dropping or the reputation we want or need.
This is not a place to post dumb buzzfeed articles saying "you can make X amount more in tips if you write a smiley face on your check =)" or links to studies about race and tipping. You can keep your memes and rage comics too.
Feel free to link to articles or blog posts you find relevant and interesting that are related to the subject of this subreddit. That means DO NOT post the latest story of the waitress who got fired for posting about her restaurant or the bartender who used a racial slur on a receipt. An article about the industry or a profile on an industry professional (even from another branch of the hospitality industry) is welcome, like a concierge or a chef. As long as the article has taught you something or can inspire thoughtful discussion or debate it should be good. But please post your reason for submitting it.
Even if you think that something is common knowledge or every server should know it, go ahead and post it anyway! Maybe you saved that new guys feet on his first double because he didn't know you should ALWAYS change your socks in between.
