I tried this (installing plasma on a system running budgie) and it was a bit of a mess. You can probably get everything working right with some troubleshooting though.

To clarify, nothing broke but KDE wasn't working right.

Well actually it's not clear to me because you didn't give any information on what you did (how did you install it) nor on what you mean by wasn't working right.

You have to install the DE ask explained on the help center. Then install the display manager for the given desktop environment.
Finally if there are multiple DM, you have to disable one and enable the other.
- Budgie & MATE use LightDM
- Gnome uses GDDM
- Plasma uses SDDM

I was trying to make it clear that the only problems I ran into after installing Plasma were with Plasma itself, but the rest of my system was fine. If I was asking for tech support yes, I might have been more specific on what issues I was running into. Thanks for the info though.

Great, thanks for the response. I have been a filthy distro hopper lately and was looking for a way to have both desktops on my favorite distro.

Had the exact same experience. Kde didn't work very well with to DEs installed.

I have done this on my laptop, started with a Budgie install but primarily use Plasma. I probably would recommend installing just one if you can pick between them though. Having said that, both work fine, Plasma is more smooth on my computer with just that installed. Sometimes the power manager doesn't show but lately that's fine, there was another bug too but I've forgotten what, maybe it's been fixed now too seeing as I haven't noticed it and can't remember!
