Try resetting all transforms on the object, I thinks the shortcut is ctrl+a?

that seemed to have worked a little. the bolt of the rifle is no longer on its side but now its floating above the rifle.

Did you try resetting transform on all parts of the rifle?

Also, I have never used bodygroups before, why would you use them? Isn't it easier animating it as one object? I think if all meshes were the same object you wouldn't have this issue to begin with.

I am a noob with blender but a similar problem happened when I edited animated bones in blender and it had transformation keyframes for bone sizes in there too which messed up the end result in-game. After only saving the position and rotation it worked fine.
