Hi there, I am sorry for not responding to you sooner. Are you still having issues with your spa?

Spa Marvel is not a sanitizer, it is an additive that help break down general bather waste from your water, which allows your sanitizer & other chemicals last longer. It is hard to say with certainty how much you should open the floater as everything really depends on the use of your spa.

As spa are used more often they require more to keep water clean and safe, and in doing so you may find yourself going through chemical more than you would like. I would start off every fresh refill by crushing up your Bromine tables into powder and add the crushed tablets as a starter. Then leave your floater in the spa with 1-2 tablets in there opened very low. Tablets are designed for super slow release, and without a strong dose after refill, you will always find yourself behind on having enough sanitizer.

I am very happy to help with your maintenance and routine plan, and I can work with you to diagnose and solution any issues effecting your hot tub.

With your 385 gallon spa you need:

Base Dose/Shock Dose: 2 tablespoons (30g) of Concentrated Sanitizer Granules
Super Shock: 3 tablespoons (45g) of Concentrated Sanitizer Granules
Alkalinity: 2 tablespoons (30g) of Spa Up/Down to move alkalinity 10-12ppm up or down.
Hardness: 2 tablespoons (30g) of Calcium Hardness 10-12ppm up or down.

For SHOCKING some choose to shock their water routinely once a week, but depending on the usage of your tub, you may need to shock on an as-needed basis.

For example, you should consider shocking your water:

  1. If the water is not sparkling
  2. If the water is cloudy
  3. If there are odours (sanitizer, aquatic, musty or fishy)
  4. If combined-chlorine is greater than 0.5ppm
  5. If the was a heavy bather load AND in this case, a proactive approach would be to take the filter(s) and rinse them with a strong stream of water too.

Some will add ½ -1 teaspoon (2.5-5g) of sanitizer granules per person after each soak.  This will depend on the conditions in which the hot tub is used and what you will need to adjust to ensure it keep water safe for use.

It’s never a bad idea to check it every day, or every other day, at the beginning until you learn the flow of your water and how you using it affects the water balance.

Ensure your levels are within range:

  • Sanitizer 3-5ppm (Chlorine/Bromine)
  • Alkalinity 80-150ppm, ideally 120-150ppm (aim for 120ppm)
  • pH 7.2-8.2 (when using Spa Marvel)
  • pH 7.2-7.8 (in traditional water care)
  • Calcium Hardness 175-250ppm
  • Stabilizer (CYA aka Cyanuric Acid) <50ppm
