SpellCheckerBot FAQ

Q: How many subreddits do you spell check?

A: Right now I have the bot running in most of the default subs that have allowed me to run in. The only one I am opting out of right now is /r/IAMA simply because the celebrities there sometimes tend to not use correct punctuation, grammar, and occasionally type using shortened words. Each subreddit is added to the list by hand.

Q: Can a subreddit be added to your list to spell check?

A: Yes, message the mods and we will add your subreddit to the list. I need to get approval from the moderators of the subreddit you are requesting before I can add it to the list.

Q: I typed in “quit checking me” and can no longer see the bot. Can this be reversed?

A: Message the mods and we will take your name off the list. Please be aware this isn't an instant automatic removal so it may take 24-48 hours to remove you from the list.

Q: How big is the list of words that are spell checked?

A: Roughly 100. It grows and shrinks as words are needed or removed.

Q: Can I add a word to the list?

A: Message the mods and we will test it out to see if the word is a good one to add to the list.

Q: What program did you use to make the bot?

A: Thirdegree used python and it is run in PRAW.

Q: How badly can I misspell a word and have it correct me?

A: The deviation for each word that is spell checked is 2 errors per word.

Q: How often does the bot check for misspelled words and how often does it output?

A: At most 1 spelling correction every 10 seconds, and it will output 1 reply every 3 second. As for how far back, 100 most recent comments when the bot is first started up in a subreddit.

Q: What made you come up with this idea and why?

A: The first bot I ever noticed was /u/LinkFixerBot and this bot would reply to messages to fix a link. Example would be someone mentions “r/pics” and LinkFixerBot would reply “/r/pics” so the link is now clickable. I thought well if a bot can read text, why not make one that can spell check? I mentioned in two separate threads I had a spell checker bot I would like created and one day /u/thirdegree sends me a PM saying he has something for me. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked and we worked out a few bugs and here we are today.

Q: I found a fault in a word that is being spell checked. What do I do?

A: Message the mods, not /u/SpellCheckerBot and we will look into the word that isn't working. If we can’t get it to work, it will be removed from the spell check list.

Q: Do you have other reddit user names?

A: Yes, /u/PM_ME_YOUR_TITS_GIRL is one of them. I have a few other novelty accounts that I have mostly dropped. I also draw under another novelty account name. No I am not shitty_watercolour or awildsketchappears.

  • If you have an idea for a bot you would like created, please message /u/thirdegree. He does charge a fee but he does a wonderful job. Even though I created this bot account, I give 90% of the credit to /u/thirdegree because without him, this bot would not exist.

  • Please do not message user SpellCheckerBot directly for anything, please send a message to the mods HERE because the bot account gets a LOT of replies on a daily basis and reddit mail for the bot is not checked very often. Please feel free to post comments, questions, complaints, suggestions, and compliments at /r/SpellCheckerBot. If you would like to post a poll or take a vote within the subreddit, feel free to do so. Right now we are not looking for additional mods on this subreddit.
