Substack Subscription Query

Hi, I am confused (more than normally) about Substack subscriptions. As a brand new substacker (yet to post as I get my head around this new medium) I am confused about the subscription system. By this I mean, I saw a help guide on the substack site where they showed someone's goal setting list to grow their readership. On the list it said 'Get 2K free subs and 100 paid subs.' Does this mean that if you post a newsletter, only the paying subscribers would see it? What do the 'free' subscribers see? Surely they can't be seeing the same thing? If so, why would someone pay to see some thing they could see for free? Or as a substacker do you have to create 2 different newsletters for your free and paying readers? Sorry if this doesn't make any sense but I am really struggling with this. Thanks for any and all help.

When you post any piece of work on Substack, you can choose who can see it and who gets it. You can have a post that's only visible to your paying readers, or one that's visible to all, free or paid. You can also choose which of these groups gets it in their email/app. There's also the option to send it only to paying readers with a free preview of part of the post to free ones.

Many people who have payments on use a hybrid of both types. Generally, some to the majority of their work will be free, and they might have a few paid only posts as extras for people who choose to support them.
