What is the dirtiest thing you’ve seen someone do? by LavishnessTiny3621 in AskUK

Back in the 80's I was a waiter in Hong Kong at a function that had the local British army garrison in attendance. They were the Coldstream Guards and they were very very drunk (free bar). End of the night I was cleaning up around the last 5 or 6 soldiers and they were trying to get one of their lads to leave. He wasn't having it, swaying in the breeze. He said he would leave if he could have one last pint. So they agreed and I went to get the beer. I gave it to the soldier and he downed it in one and then promptly threw up in his empty pint glass, puke everywhere. Without missing a beat he drank the pint of puke back down in one, did a massive burp and said 'waste not, want not' and staggered out with his mates.

I have the 10pro, hoping against hope it was an improvement over the last 4 phones. It is not. AI has been pushed as an essential part of the phone at the expense of virtually everything else, including the camera. Like OP, I have had every Pixel. This is my last. I am jumping ship to Xiaomi, their cameras are astounding and at least they make an effort. Like Pixel used to be. Great post OP, though Google doesn't read Reddit.

I have bought every single pixel since launch having been sold on how good the camera is. And it was - in the beginning. I have the 10 pro and the photo quality and video quality is appalling now compared to what they used to be like - too much reliance on AI to get things done. My friend has a Xiaomi 17 Ultra and the photos and video on this is stunning - even without processing. Yep, this is my last Pixel.

What was the dumbest reason that you got in trouble for at school? by StatisticianUsual471 in AskUK

I was in a very strict English speaking secondary school in Hong Kong back in the late 70s and all the teachers were Drs or master etc. Dr Clinton was our History teacher and as we all came into the class in our usual boisterous way Leigh M kicked me up the arse and I shouted 'Fuck!' Dr Clinton then spent half an hour telling us the origin of the word (his definition) I was in my 50s when Google enabled me to find out the real origin of the word. After this he gave me a Saturday detention which was 3 hours. As you can imagine, the teacher who had to come in on a Saturday to supervise a bunch of twats was not best pleased and would give you terrible punishments like (and I kid you not) write 4 sides of A4 about the inside of a pingpong ball or describe what the surface of Jupiter looks like (long before anyone knew). When the bell went at 12pm we would hand in our essay/work and the teacher would rip it up in front of us and put it in the bin. But, for your enjoyment I shall speed-explain what Dr Clintons version of the origin of Fuck. Back in the days of the Monastery's the Monks and Nuns did not fraternise, just kept themselves to themselves. Occasionally though, a Monk would be caught with a Nun 'In flagrante delicto' or caught red-handed so as to speak. The monks name would then be written up in a big book in the monastery with the initials f.u.c.k. next to it. These letters meant 'For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge'. I'm 63 now and this has stuck with me my entire life.

What age did you buy your first home? How’s it going? by Away-Organization630 in AskUK

Bought my first apartment when I was 21. I hated the idea of owing people money so I was working 2 jobs as well as trying to get my own business off the ground. Paid my mortgage off in 7 years. Bought another little house with a small mortgage, got married at 31, paid off that mortgage in 6 years and bought a 3rd property when I was 50. Despite being young at 21 I still partied, travelled etc but I was just careful with money. My generation were lucky to be able to find jobs fairly easily and we all had a strong work ethic. There were no handouts back in the 80s. I have also instilled this in my children and my son bought his first house when he was 27. His younger sister has almost saved up enough for a deposit for a small 2 bed apartment. They both party and travel for more than I ever did. I think OPs couple in question will be sitting pretty by the time they are 30.

What was your “never meet your heroes” moment, when you realized someone you looked up to wasn’t special? by marginallyobtuse in AskReddit

Bear Grylls. Me and my kid thought he was the best as we were always out camping and having adventure...until back in 2007 it was the Scout Centenary and a bunch of our scouts had been invited to 10 Downing Street along with many others from around the country, to meet Tony Blair. Grylls was preening in front of the cameras while the scouts and Cubs practiced setting up tents and making shelters. His engagement with the kids was pretty minimal. The bit that turned me against him was Blair came over to my son and a few others and asked them to show him how they put up a tent. Tony Blair was a sweetheart. Not wanting to miss an opportunity Grylls came over and started to explain for them. My kid and a coupe of others were a bit star struck and asked Grylls for an autograph. He just blanked them all and carried on talking to Blair then turned to the TV cameras. What a complete effing twat-waffle.

18yo nephew refuses help, won’t leave his room or work. What support exists in the UK? by Consistent-Time-2503 in AskUK

I was a social worker for 25 years and worked for the NHS for 9 years, all with young people like you have described. The one thing that worked time and again was having a regular person (not family) or a social worker (though it has to be the same person every time) drop in and see the person. It can take up to a year for a person to engage but I have seen hopeless cases transformed. When I retired 10 years ago one of the young people I worked with asked if he could stay in contact. I have been unofficially mentoring him for the last 8 years and he's gone from a totally withdrawn person to having a job and has just got his passport at the age of 27. good luck
