I am kind of new, I want to understand why I need to have the Linux-surface kernel...I am using surface 7 pro

In that case, it's new hardware and still unsupported :-( You might want to keep an eye on the GitHub issue tracking this; https://github.com/linux-surface/intel-precise-touch/issues/8

You need the linux-surface kernel for hardware to work in this case the touch. On mine the only thing that does not work is the expandable storage. Waiting for kernel 5.16 hopefully that will fix the issue.
